The Patris was a paddle steamer that operated between the Greek islands, carrying passengers and goods. At the time of its construction, it was considered one of the most advanced and modern ships of its time. However, on February 23, 1868, tragedy struck when the Patris ran aground near Kea Island while en route from Piraeus to the island of Syros. Despite efforts to save the ship, it eventually sank, claiming the lives of hundreds of people.
The sinking of the Patris was a significant event in Greek maritime history and drew attention to the importance of safety measures in sea travel. The wreckage of the ship still remains on the seabed and serves as a reminder of the dangers of maritime transportation.
